Moshers

Enjoying the concert? Watch out for Moshers!

The term “Mosher” comes from the verb moshing which is used to describe a violent dance known as “slamdancing”. This particular dancing stile consists in slamming and pushing into each other and sometimes injuring others which might not want to be involved. It is done to live and connect with the music, which usually are hardcore punk or numerous styles of metal.

-Imagine if the moshers listened to classical music. How do you think they’d be?

Although moshing is considered to be a manifestation of appreciation it has drawn criticisms for the dangerous excesses which sometimes occur. Lots of people get involuntarily involved in these manifestations and because these “mosh pits” are so violent lots of injuries have been reported. Mosh pits are considered to be a place where people are involved in lots of body contact with energetic dancing (moshing). There sometimes can be dancing variations like “pogoing”(jumping up and down) or the more extreme “wall of death” in which a few death have actually occurred.

Researchers from Cornell University in Ithaca after analysing videos on internet found similarities in their movements like the ones of 2-D gases in equilibrium.

Here is a montage of clips took in mosh pits-

A bit of history

The word “mosh” come into use in the early 1980’s from a hardcore scene in Washington, D.C. Early on the dance was spelled mash but pronounced mosh, from the song “Total Mash” of the local group Bad Brains (considered the starters of moshing), which encouraged the people to mosh in their song lyrics. this term was then adopted by other bands such as Anthrax, Stormtroopers of Death, The Melvins and even Nirvana, making it a commonly used term.
